Under the name as Khmer Republic, the side managed a 4–0 win over Kuwait, which send Cambodia to reach the semi-finals of the six-team tournament. They were then eliminated by Iran in the knockout match.
History
Operated under the name Khmer Republic from 1970 to 1975, it was founded in 1933 and joined FIFA's ranks in 1953. They also qualified to their first ever AFC Asian Cup in 1972 finishing in fourth place after losing to rivals, Thailand 3–5 on penalties shootout.
It returned internationally and participated its in first tournament which is the 1996 AFF Championship, in which it was defeated in all of the 4 matches. Cambodia also participated in the 1998 World Cup qualification being group with Yemen, Uzbekistan and Indonesia but finished at rock bottom of the group without a win. Cambodia also participated in the 2006 AFC Challenge Cup contested with Palestine, Bangladesh and Guam but unfortunately crashed out from the group stage winning their only match against Guam 3–0. Cambodia withdrew from participating in the 2006 World Cup qualification. They also participated in the 2000 AFC Asian Cup qualification, before withdrawing from the 2004 and 2007 qualification attempts.
Keisuke Honda tenures (2018–2023)
In August 2018, world-renowned Japanese star, Keisuke Honda was named technical director of Cambodia. Under this arrangement, whilst still actively playing for Melbourne Victory as a player, Honda will hold weekly (presumably online) conference with Cambodia coaching staff, and will be on the touchline when Cambodia's match is in the FIFA International match Calendar, he would then be assisted by another head coach alongside him, initially Félix Dalmás stepping in whenever Honda is unavailable. Critics questioned whether Honda could commit the time and energy needed to improve Cambodia while pursuing his playing career and wondered if such an unconventional deal could provide any benefits. Many in the region initially scoffed at the decision, seeing it as little more than a publicity stunt. Observers were left even more bemused when Honda made no less than four further transfers as a player while managing the Cambodian national team, none of which brought him any closer to the side he was coaching. On 10 September 2018, In Honda first charge of Cambodia, they lost 3–1 against Malaysia.
Given the odd nature of his appointment, many expected Honda would need to make an instant impact to win hearts of the Cambodia citizens. To the contrary, he has been given plenty of time to work his magic on the team, and early uncertainty has given way to a substantial uptick in performances Honda first assignment as a coach was the 2018 AFF Championship, collecting three points, thanks to a 3–1 victory over bottom-placed Laos. Following its failure to qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, Cambodia participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification first round where it beat Pakistan in both games 4–1 on aggregate to reach the second round being drawn with Hong Kong, Bahrain, Bahrain, Iraq and Iran. On 5 September 2019 in the first fixture, Cambodia obtained a 1–1 draw at home to Hong Kong, five days later, they lost against Bahrain 1–0. In August 2020, Félix Dalmás left his post after completing his contract while on 7 April 2021, fellow countrymen, Ryu Hirose was unveiled as the new head coach of the Cambodia taking the team whenever Honda is unavailable. Hirose immediate task is to guide Cambodia for the remaining matches of the second round qualifiers of the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualification. Cambodia went on to suffered two extraordinary defeats to Iran, their worst ever defeat, 14–0 on 10 October 2019 and then 10–0 on 11 June 2021 seeing Cambodia picking up just a solitary point in their group.
Cambodia than participate in the 2020 AFF Championship in Singapore which see the squad saw a stunning 12 players under the age of 21, compared to just five in Honda’s first tournament back in 2018. This squad was led by the exciting prospect, Sieng Chanthea, who successfully guided the side through the qualifying stage for the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship for the first time in the nation’s history. Meanwhile, players like Chan Vathanaka and Chreng Polroth had experienced football abroad and brought their experiences back to help the national team. Honda only started coaching directly from 2021, after retiring as a player.
Cambodia’s greatest-ever tournament

As the 2022 AFF Championship tournament began, Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) announced the 2022 AFF Championship tournament would be Honda last time with the senior national team. In Cambodia's first fixture on 20 December 2022 at home, quick-fire goals from Reung Bunheing and Orn Chanpolin put Cambodia in front before a brace from Kenshiro Daniels leveled the scoring. However, Bunheing struck again with a header past Kevin Ray Mendoza in the Philippines’ net, capturing Cambodia with a remarkable 3–2 victory over the Philippines. The 2–1 defeat to Indonesia on Matchday two still came with an encouraging performance for Honda’s men, who remained competitive throughout the entire match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Cambodia then returned home for the fixture which could prove decisive which is the must-win match against Brunei on 29 December 2022, Cambodia were stunned to find themselves a goal behind when Nur Ikhwan Othman struck the opener after 21 minutes. Defender Choun Chanchav leveled the scoring 10 minutes later followed by new diaspora recruit Nick Taylor, who scored his first goal for his country. With momentum now in their favours, the goals started to flow. Keo Sokpheng put away a second penalty before hot prospect, Lim Pisoth added a brace in the final ten minutes to secure a dominant 5–1 win but suffered a 3–1 away defeat to rivals Thailand. Regardless of the result against Thailand, Honda will forever be etched into Cambodian football history helping them to accumulated their highest points gained in their history of the tournament with 6 points as Cambodia rise has been eagerly charted by fans across the continent. Honda would then be redesignated to continue his final duties to guide the Cambodia under-23 side at the 2023 SEA Games held in Cambodia before stepping down his affirmation with Cambodia in late May 2023.
In March 2023, FFC announced the return of former coach, Félix Dalmás signing a four-year contract to coach both the Cambodian senior squad and the under-23 team. In Dalmás first tasked was the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification against Pakistan where on 12 October 2023, both sides contested in a goalless draw in Phnom Penh
Team image
From 2010 to 2022, Cambodia home kit was a blue and black shirt with black shorts and blue socks; while the original away kit was all white with a series of horizontal red stripes on the shirt. FBT sponsored this version of the kit.[8]
On May 27, 2022, the team announced its new kit collection. The Khmer sportswear company, Varaman established in February 2022 sponsored them with designs by HCD football agency Clan United. The designs are based upon the flag of Cambodia, with the blue and red tones from the flag featured along with a pattern made from pixelated images of Angkor Wat. The 2022 home shirt uses a 3 toned blue digital camouflage design. The away shirt is all white fabric, with a zoomed in section of the pattern decorated in faint blue and red tones whilst being separated by patterns and shapes. To match each set, the goalkeeper kits are red and blue for home and away respectively. The repeated element is "slightly off-coloured" from the base fabric. The training kits are blue, red, and white with a graffiti styled pattern on each.[9]
