konne- + vesi (“water”), where the konne- element is derived from a Sami word meaning "deer", reconstructed Proto-Samic *kontē (cf. Northern Sami goddi). Also compare Konnivesi, a lake in Heinola.
First attested in 1554 as Konnevessij äremarch.
